Date: July 2009
Pages: 368

Synopsis:

For all her life, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith—her friends call her Bertie—has lived in the Theatre, a magical and entrancing place filled with every character ever written in a play, who are all controlled by The Book. Bertie is content there, but her happiness is about to come to an end when the Theater Manager threatens to throw her out of the Theatre for being so destructive. She has only one chance to stay: she must make an invaluable contribution to the Theatre.

But kind of invaluable contribution can she, an ordinary girl, make to the majestic Theatre? More than she thinks. As Bertie begins to understand the extent of her writing powers, Ariel, a dazzlingly persuasive spirit from the play The Tempest, sets out to gain his freedom by wrecking the The Book and the Theatre. Bertie will have to set aside her self-doubts if she intends to save the Theatre and unravel the mystery of her past.

Review:

Holy cow, this book was outstanding. Bertie was such a fun, free character and I loved how she was always herself. Also, a few weeks ago I finally dyed the under part of my hair violet, which I've been wanting to do for SO long, and when I heard of all of the colors she'd dyed her hair, I was like "HEY! I want to do that to my hair!!" Then my mom and I proceeded to argue about why I want to and can ("Normal hair is uber boring and it's my hair!" That would be me.) and why I shouldn't and can't (My mother. "All of your hair will fall out and because I said so!") Guess who won? No one. BUT, because I was so stubborn (Like mother like daughter.) she agreed to allow me to cut my hair and dye it a little darker before school starts. YAY! :-D

Okay...back to the reason I'm typing in the first place...

*clears throat* I loved the faeries because they were so funny and kept me entertained throughout the entire novel, even when it was a serious scene. Possibly also because they remind me of my unbelievably annoying, but loving nephews. :D Nate was so sweet and protective and while Ophelia wasn't the most liked character, she was sweet and I knew she was somehow important to the book when I first began reading it and was proved correct. Now Ariel, he was just the hot bad boy of this book. Amazingly dreamy, amazingly dangerous. ; ] The whole storyline was super original and kept me guessing until the very end even though I had a few ideas myself. None of which were correct. =/ Haha. This was the first book in quite a while that I read without having to try hard to picture the setting. All of Bertie's surrounding where written on the page, all I had to do was read and let them create themselves on my mind. Hm, do I sound crazy? :P

Cover:
Warning: I may get started again!

I LOVE THIS COVER! I'm not quite so sure how I would have imagined Bertie without seeing the cover though because when I see the person face on the cover, I am forever picturing them like that. I love the faeries flying around her (at first I was like "What are those things? Dragonflies?) and the font really went well with the entire picture. What really made me bite down hard on the bait was the girl. She was super beautiful and her hair had my staring at the book for hours and telling all my sister's that "Look! This is the color I wanted to dye the bottom of my hair!" I got back many "Yeah, that's a nice color"s and "You should have"s. I also really like the dress she is wearing and how it makes the girl look very elegant.

Characters:10/10
Plot:10/10
Writing:10/10
Originality: 10/10
Cover: 10/10
Overall: 50/50

!!!
:D

-KailtynKaitlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18304677551824548743noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-214535210679033614.post-10808696185687480182009-07-29T20:51:00.000-07:002009-07-29T20:57:28.700-07:00Waiting On Wednesday! Maybe I should have done that instead of reading it while laying on my living room floor on a rainy day... Well, it didn't matter that much because I still felt as if I was where Belly was, doing what Belly was doing. Let's just say that this is the perfect summer read (like Twenty Boy Summer.) Jenny Han writes about first love, family, and friendship; something everyone can (or will be able to) relate to. The Summer I Turned Pretty was a easy-flowing read that kept me entertained through out. I was laughing with Belly, Jeremiah, Steven, and Conrad, then crying with them the next. But their stories don't match, and the rumors spin out of control. Then other people get involved . . . the school, the parents, the lawyers. The incident at the back of the bus becomes the center of Maisie's life and the talk of the school, and, horribly, it becomes news. With just a few words and a touch, the kids and their community are changed forever.

Review:

First off, let me say that I was uber excited when I got this book last week and read it in one sitting. It was really that good. Here's a little about it: Maisie, Shakes, Chris, and Kevin have been friends since birth. While most people think that a young girl having three boys as best friends is weird, to them it's the most natural thing in the world. Until, that is, the year she moves to live with her divorced mom and comes back a little...different. While Maisie's away, she blossoms. She grows boobs. And her old friends are also different; they aren't kids anymore, they're boys. Maisie hopes that things will still be the same, but soon realizes that they will never be again. But things being different is not always bad. While Maisie and Shakes have always had a special bond, feelings go farther and they end up having a secret, and brutally intense, relationship. But one day, when Maisie is betrayed, things take a horrible turn. Maisie tries to ignore it, but the secret's out and soon Maisie cannot tell the difference between the truth and what she makes herself believe happened in the back of the bus.

Touch was a fantastic novel. The writing was easy-flowing and really let me connect with Maisie. She was an extraordinary character that I felt I had a few things in common with. Not only was this book well written, but it also had an (as you can tell) incredible plot and moral behind it. It is the story of a girl who must deal with the manipulation of trauma. Now, I'm going to stop there because I know that I'll get carried away and end up telling you all about how the book ended. All in all, it was a fantastic novel that read easily and really made me connect with the main character.

Cover:

I like the feeling of this cover and how it tells the story. It definitely did draw me to the book, but I realized after I read it that it didn't completely go with the story. It made it quite obvious that Maisie would never be the type of girl to wear a skirt, especially since she "enhanced". Am I being picky? I don't know. That was my first thought when I closed the book and glanced at the cover. No matter, it still doesn't change my opinion.

Characters-9/10
Plot-9/10
Writing-8/10
Originality- 7/10
Cover- 10/10
Overall-43/50

-Kaitlyn
:]

Kaitlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18304677551824548743noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-214535210679033614.post-39899730543386808442009-07-19T12:58:00.000-07:002009-07-19T13:06:52.162-07:00Super Cool Contest!Hosted by The Story Siren!
She's giving away some of the books that were on display and some bookish goodies that she picked up at ALA. Her parents have decided to move the family from Chicago back to their hometown of Boston in the middle of Emily's senior year. Only Emily's first real boyfriend, Sean, is in Chicago, and so is her shot at class valedictorian and early admission to the Ivy League. What's a nice girl to do?

Then Sean dumps Emily on moving day and her father announces he's staying behind in Chicago "to tie up loose ends," and Emily decides that what a nice girl needs to do is to stop being nice.

She reconnects with her best friends in Boston, Josie and Lucy, only to discover that they too have been on the receiving end of some glaring Guy Don'ts. So when the girls have to come up with something to put in the senior class time capsule, they know exactly what to do. They'll create a not-so-nice reference guide for future generations of guys — an instruction book that teaches them the right way to treat girls.
But when her friends draft Emily to test out their tips on Luke Preston — the hottest, most popular guy in school, who just broke up with Josie by email — Emily soon finds that Luke is the trickiest of test subjects . . . and that even a nice girl like Emily has a few things to learn about love.

Review-

Where was I when this book came out? I surely would have devoured it (kind of like I just did.) Okay, nevertheless, I loved it. The Book of Luke was definitely a romantic-comedy. Once again, I was shocked at how thick it was. (Not that it was thick, just thinker than what I expected.) What I liked the most about this book was definitely the plot. How awesome would making a guide for guys be?! I mean, come on!! That would save us all a lot of trouble. But tips to the next people to try this: Don't try it on your best friend's ex. :] But good thing this story had such an interesting plot because, once again, I felt suffocated in details. The Book of Luke had some very interesting part where I thought there was no way I would ever close the book, but then there would be parts that I felt Emily was just babbling away in her head and I had a hard time concentrating on the book. Other than that, I really found this entertaining and fun.

Cover-

Once again, the cover is what first attracted me to The Book of Luke. It just looks so relaxing and fun. It really goes well with the story (although it is winter in the book, I believe.) Kayla must choose between the life she knows and the love she feels certain is her destiny.

Review-

Moonlight by Rachel Hawthorne, in my view, was an okay book. While I really love Rachel Hawthorne (I've read all of her books! :D) I thought this book was slow at the beginning, then sped up drastically at the end. I felt that the book could have used a few more details. But besides the that, the book was great. It kept me entertained throughout, and I found that no matter what I've heard some of my friends say, this book was not the "same thing" as Twilight or other paranormal books that have werewolves. While I was reading Moonlight, I thought about Moonlight and only that. Twilight did not cross my mind while reading it, but I must say that it did when I first heard of the book. But so what? That's what attracted me to it in the first place. Another thing I loved about this book was the romance. While I did think that Lucas and Kayla did fall for each other a little too fast, I understood why and really felt the connection between them. All I have to say is , I'll be looking forward to reading the next book in the series :]

Cover-

I thought this cover was really pretty, but the one thing that bothered me throughout the book was that I just could not picture Kayla looking like that. Even after staring hard at the cover and picturing her in my mind, I could not do it. I somehow pictured Kayla more soft looking instead of with those high cheekbones and skinny face. Was it just me? Other than that, I really liked the cover. What I digged the most was the way they made it look light the moonlight was shining down on her. It's just really beautiful.

Characters-8/10
Plot-7/10
Writing-6/10
Originality- 6/10
Cover- 9/10
Overall-36/50

Kaitlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18304677551824548743noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-214535210679033614.post-78427242102698292292009-07-10T15:37:00.000-07:002009-07-10T17:46:46.352-07:00Plan B by Jenny O'Connel
Synopsis-

Coast through senior year. What I liked most was most likely the plot. It was pretty original, if you ask me. Plan B also had some very funny moments. This book was very humorous and entertaining. No matter how much I enjoyed this book though, I have to admit I had a hard time getting into it when I first began reading it. I thought that some parts had too many details. Was it just me? Hmm... I don't know. The characters in this book, to me, were pretty realistic. I pictured Vanessa's boyfriend perfectly (the typical "jock"). Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, but it could have been more entertaining at the beginning.

I thought the cover to this book was so pretty. The girl on the front has a really beautiful eye color and I like how she's hiding behind her hands like she's in shock. It kind of attracted me to this book in the first place. The one thing I didn't like about the book cover was the girl's blonde hair showing at the top right corner. It just looks really awkward considering her eyebrows are much darker, no? At first I thought that her hair was the wall behind her, but then realized it wasn't and was like, "Hmm...weird."

Characters-8/10
Plot-9/10
Writing-7/10
Originality- 8/10
Cover- 9/10
Overall-41/50

-Kaitlyn. :]
Kaitlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18304677551824548743noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-214535210679033614.post-69225111553291038722009-07-05T17:54:00.000-07:002009-07-05T19:58:03.473-07:00In My Mailbox 7/5Okay, so this week I am unable to make a video. =/ But that's fine. Built in 1878 and closed in 1992, this abandoned mental institution is rumored to be the birthplace of the lobotomy. On the eve of the hospital's demolition, six teens break in to spend the night and film a movie about their experiences. For Derik, it's an opportunity to win a filmmaking contest and save himself from a future of flipping burgers at his parents' diner. For the others, it's a chance to be on TV, or a night with no parents. But what starts as a dare quickly escalates into a nightmare. Behind the crumbling walls, down every dark passageway, and in each deserted room, they will unravel the mysteries of those who once lived there and the spirits who still might.

Review-

Boy, did this book give me the creeps. I would definitely not have been able to do what these six teenagers did. I am a huge believer in the paranormal and would have bailed this break-in before I was ever offered the part. I loved the way the story was told in changing point of views and got the chance to feel what everyone was feeling. While this is definitely a mystery book, it also has romance and deals with family issues. This book even had me laughing out loud at times. Project 17 was a pretty easy read (read it in one day,) but was indeed a excellent book. I recommend this book to mystery and drama lovers.

4 stars

Thanks a bunch,
Kaitlyn
Kaitlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18304677551824548743noreply@blogger.com1
